My guest today is Sarahlyn Bruck, whose fabulous novel, Designer You, was recently launched.
Sarahlyn Bruck writes contemporary women’s fiction and lives
in Philadelphia with her husband and daughter. She is the author of Designer You, published by Crooked Cat Books on August 31, 2018. She has an MA in English from Cal State Los Angeles and teaches writing and literature as an associate professor at a local community college. She also coaches writers for Author Accelerator.
Designer You is Sarahlyn’s debut, and she is hard at work on her next book.
Megan: Sarahlyn, thanks for joining me. Now, we are at totally different time zones so unfortunately a real coffee isn't possible but virtually what would you be drinking?
Sarahlyn: I always black coffee in the a.m. and either iced tea or latte in the afternoon.
Megan: I love iced tea in the US. We can't quite get the same thing here in Australia. Now, congratulations on Designer You. Tell us about it.
Sarahlyn: I’m so excited about the release of Designer You. The book centers on Pam Wheeler, a wife and mom, who is part of a very successful husband and wife do-it-yourself design team, Designer You. As a couple, they appear on TV and podcasts, write books and blogs, and design for high-profile clients. When her husband, Nate, dies suddenly, so too goes the heart of the business. Pam must figure out how deal with her grief, fix her relationship with her troubled daughter, and come out from behind Nate’s shadow to save Designer You.
Megan: I've read it and loved it! I think it would be a great book club read. Is that the sort of books do you like to read? What was the last book you read?
Sarahlyn: Thank you. I love upmarket or book club fiction, literary fiction, contemporary women’s fiction, narrative non-fiction, and classics. My book club keeps me on my toes by recommending selections that I may not gravitate toward on my own, and I’m always glad I read them. One recent book I finished and recommend was Rachel Kushner’s The Mars Room. It still haunts me.
Megan: What's next for you? What are you currently working on?
Sarahlyn: My latest book has been so much fun to write and it’s almost ready to pitch. It’s about a soap opera star, Calliope Hart, who thinks that at 41, she’s got her life just the way she likes it. But the day she learns her show’s about to be canceled, her world starts to spin out of control. She finds herself scrambling to provide for her son and her mother, sustain her sky-high mortgage payments, and hang onto her relationship with her head-writer boyfriend. But she’s also secretly struggling to pay to keep her ex at bay—Jonah’s biological father, who Jonah doesn’t even know exists. In the end, the book is about whether it’s more important to cling to what we know or take a risk and start over from scratch.
Megan: That sounds fabulous. I love the idea of a soap opera/entertainment setting. What are your writing routines? Are you an early bird writer or night owl?
Sarahlyn: I’m an early bird—that’s the time when I’m sharpest and most creative. There are certainly exceptions, but ideally I do most of my writing in the morning. Afternoons I can edit, grade, pay attention to social media, etc. And most evenings are reserved for relaxing with my family.
Megan: Are you a planner or pantser?
Sarahlyn: Planner for sure. I’m obsessed with outlining.
Megan: What kind of research do you undertake ahead of writing a book?
Sarahlyn: For Designer You, I did a ton of research about the design world. I love old homes—I live in one, actually—and had a blast reading scores of design blogs and magazines and how-tos. There’s so much to learn!
Megan: Thanks for joining me today and all the best with Designer You!
Sarahlyn: Thanks for hosting me.
