Espresso tales: Coffee with Heidi Catherine

In the latest of my blog series, I meet up for a chat with Heidi Catherine, author of The Soulweaver series.

Heidi Catherine's award-winning, romantic fantasy series, The Soulweaver, explores the possibility of loving the same souls over many lifetimes. The first novel in the series was the winner of Romance Writers of Australia's Emerald Pro award. It is followed by The Truthseeker and The Shadowmaker. Not being able to decide if she prefers living in Melbourne or the Mornington Peninsula, Heidi shares her time between both places. She is similarly pulled in opposing directions by her two sons and two dogs, remaining thankful she only has one husband.

The Truthseeker is the second book in The Soulweaver series and has just been released through Crooked Cat Books.

Megan: Heidi, welcome to Espresso Tales. What can I get you to drink?

Heidi: Skinny cappuccino, please.

Megan: Tell me about your latest book, The Truthseeker, which is the second in The Soulweaver series? What can readers expect from the series?

Heidi: The Soulweaver series is about loving the same souls over many lifetimes. It explores not only romantic love, but love between a parent and child, between siblings or even just friends. Readers have been describing it as a highly original series that’s made them look at life and love in a different way.

The Truthseeker has just been released and so far it’s surprising readers with the direction it takes the story in – but thankfully in a good way! It’s about truth and forgiveness and finding love in unexpected places.

Megan: What sort of books do you like to read? What was the last book you read?

Heidi: The last book I read was Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman, and I fell in love with it, despite it breaking my heart several times over. I’ve always read across a lot of different genres as I find that keeps life interesting. It’s also one of the reasons I love being part of a book group as I’ve read some brilliant books that I wouldn’t normally have picked up otherwise. I’m a sucker for a book that has a plot twist I didn’t seen coming or one that makes me laugh or cry (or both!).

Megan: That's on my to-be-read list, after The Truthseeker, that is. What are you currently working on?

Heidi: I’ve just finished the third and final book in The Soulweaver series. It’s called The Shadowmaker and will be released on 31 May. I wrote the first draft of this book a few years ago and was never happy with it, but couldn’t figure out what the problem was. One of my friends took a look at it recently and pinpointed what she thought was missing. And she was exactly right! So I went back and re-worked it and… I love it now! It’s the perfect conclusion to the series. To say I feel relieved is a huge understatement. I can’t wait to get it out into the world.

Megan: Writer friends are the best for picking up those sorts of things. When do you write? Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Heidi: Neither! I write during the day while I have the house to myself. Early mornings have never been my friend and I’m usually far too tired at night to get much done. I’m lucky enough at the moment for writing to be my full-time focus, so I spend as much time as possible during the day at my desk either writing or working on book promotion.

Megan: How organised are you when you sit down to write? Do you plot or just let your characters lead?

Heidi: Both. But really I’m more of a pantser. I very loosely plot a book before I start, but one of the things I love best is to let the book lead me. I really enjoy it when a character shocks me with something they do or say. To plot out all the fine details would take that joy and surprise out of the process for me. Although I admit it would probably save a lot of time during the writing and editing process!

Megan: Thanks so much for joining me on Espresso Tales and I can't wait to read The Truthseeker and The Shadowmaker!
